It wouldn't surprise me if that's precisely the case; to be blunt, I've been entertaining the notion that we've all been tampered with somehow, simply because there's no rational explanation for any of this otherwise.

[Not that "everyone is brainwashed and crazy" is precisely a rational explanation in any sort of normal situation, but this isn't a normal situation. So we can just leave that part alone, if no one minds.]
