MIDNIGHT/DAY 2 - suspicion

[ In the spirit of Ace Attorney, the game where murders happen but NO ONE ACTUALLY SEES THE ACTUAL THING EXCEPT FOR THE PERPETRATORS…

The night has ended. You might have ousted someone, but NOTHING HAPPENS. You go back to your rooms and you find some samurai dogs by your bedside. At least there's food. Better than nothing. But you feel tired. It's been a long and stressful day. Could you even sleep at that rate?

In the middle of the night, you might hear a loud thud. If you wake up (or if you were already awake) and check the hallway, you'll find a bust—or its remnants—by the mirror closer to the Hawthorne and Gavin rooms. The statue is coloured… pink? Magenta? Well, whatever.

Behind the bust is a body… a dead body. Yup, that's right.

If you approach it, you'll find the dead body of Myriam Scuttlebutt. There's no box, just the young girl. If you saw her without the guise of her box, you'll realise that she isn't wearing her school uniform. She has a green jumpsuit on. Her arms were raised and had some red markings on her wrist, as if her hands had been tied. An awl was lodged in her abdomen. Dried blood by her wound, as if the blood had seeped through from her wound.

Myriam Scuttlebutt has been taken out by the allies of the Bad Badger. You have all been warned. You should have expected this.

If you decide to do a headcount, you'll find that one team is missing. One team with two members in it. The room to the Engarde room is swinging open. Do you check it out?

Upon entering, you'll find Matt Engarde's corpse placed conveniently on a chair. You'd think it's Matt, anyway. He seems to be wearing the Nickel Samurai costume. He's seated with his head facing the ground. There's a scarf on his neck, placed rather too tightly. Did he did from strangulation…? By the chair is an open guitar case, and a vanity with a wine glass on top of it.

By the only mirror in the room is Simon Keye's body, hanging frrom the ceiling. Nearby is a coffee table, and an envelope with the police department's seal on it. Whoever opens it will read a letter that reads "proto badgr kill."

If you go back to the library, you'll find Myriam's mirror still standing, but it doesn't function as a mirror anymore. You'll find a portrait of Aristotle Means instead, like a huge picture frame. A huge X painted in red covers about half of the portrait. The same goes for Matt and Simon Keye's mirrors - except Simon's mirror also has Matt's face on it. L O L.

The other mirrors have names again… although if you count, there seems to be only ten teams now: ]

[ Yes, don't remind him. He was bitter about it for years, you know! But Godot has also been out of the loop on some of Edgeworth's recent... personal developments. ]

Is he now? Uncle Ray has a feeling that Miles is ready to follow in his father's footsteps.

... Well, it'd be a hell of an improvement over Von Karma. Edgeworth Sr. was before my time in the office, but Grossberg always had a good word to say about him. I'm sorry I never got to meet him, or shake his hand for putting a dent in Old Ironsides' perfect record. I'd have given just about anything to see the old buzzard's face when Greg stuck it to him.

[ His smirk is genuine, if full of the kind of satisfaction you can only get from seeing someone you dislike fail. ]

But his record spoke for itself. It was a pretty good inspiration for me when I was being put through my paces.

Not quite. [ There's a hint of a smile as he hears someone else sing praises of Gregory. ]

I was just his assistant back then, a doe-eyed teenager who didn't get to learn nearly enough from a kind defense attorney. My heart still breaks when I think of that fateful day.

However, his son has turned out to be an even greater man, no matter which path he decides to choose.

[ Hold on, he's trying to imagine this doe-eyed Ray...

Alright, back on track. ]

Well, if that thing really does have him, I can't his path right now is any more certain or up to him than ours.

But I wouldn't start thinking of reunions in the afterlife so soon, unless you think we're all going to die here before we can puzzle out an advantage or an escape route.

[ He exhales slowly through his nose. ]

I feel angry. It makes me sharper.

[ Without his coffee, he has to manufacture his own bitterness for fuel. It's not difficult, given their current situation. ]

I've been noticing we've all been given new names by the badger. The ones that I recognize have one thing in common: they're all murderers. It even said something like that not long ago.

I'm starting to wonder... if it thinks it's punishing those people.

It would appear you are correct. However, death as a punishment? People deserve a chance to reform in prison.

This is just getting out of hand.

Heh... not according to our justice system. The prescription for a murderer in this country is capital punishment.

And the blue badger is supposed to be a mascot for justice, isn't it?

In the usual case, yes, but that's where we defense attorneys come in. [ Ray doesn't just represent innocent clients, but also works on getting a lighter sentence for criminals who plead guilty. ]

Whose murderer alias did you receive, if I may ask?

Simon Blackquill and I are the Phantom.

So far as I can tell, the aliases seem to have some relation to at least one of its team members.

Though in the case of a few, the name is one of the party members.

[ Gavin, Engarde, and Dahlia, to be precise. ]

[ He turns his gaze towards Mia, far off as she is at the moment. ]

Mia and her sister, Maya Fey, are team Redd White. Grossberg and I trained Mia to be a defense attorney. She, in turn, trained Wright...

Or she will. There's an issue of time displacement, there.

How is she expected to fight for her innocence while she has her own brother to think about? And the Fey sisters...

[ --and time displacement? Ray will definitely add that to his court records. ]

So you understand now. Each of the new teams has someone they need to protect on the other ones.
