MIDNIGHT/DAY 2 - suspicion

[ In the spirit of Ace Attorney, the game where murders happen but NO ONE ACTUALLY SEES THE ACTUAL THING EXCEPT FOR THE PERPETRATORS…

The night has ended. You might have ousted someone, but NOTHING HAPPENS. You go back to your rooms and you find some samurai dogs by your bedside. At least there's food. Better than nothing. But you feel tired. It's been a long and stressful day. Could you even sleep at that rate?

In the middle of the night, you might hear a loud thud. If you wake up (or if you were already awake) and check the hallway, you'll find a bust—or its remnants—by the mirror closer to the Hawthorne and Gavin rooms. The statue is coloured… pink? Magenta? Well, whatever.

Behind the bust is a body… a dead body. Yup, that's right.

If you approach it, you'll find the dead body of Myriam Scuttlebutt. There's no box, just the young girl. If you saw her without the guise of her box, you'll realise that she isn't wearing her school uniform. She has a green jumpsuit on. Her arms were raised and had some red markings on her wrist, as if her hands had been tied. An awl was lodged in her abdomen. Dried blood by her wound, as if the blood had seeped through from her wound.

Myriam Scuttlebutt has been taken out by the allies of the Bad Badger. You have all been warned. You should have expected this.

If you decide to do a headcount, you'll find that one team is missing. One team with two members in it. The room to the Engarde room is swinging open. Do you check it out?

Upon entering, you'll find Matt Engarde's corpse placed conveniently on a chair. You'd think it's Matt, anyway. He seems to be wearing the Nickel Samurai costume. He's seated with his head facing the ground. There's a scarf on his neck, placed rather too tightly. Did he did from strangulation…? By the chair is an open guitar case, and a vanity with a wine glass on top of it.

By the only mirror in the room is Simon Keye's body, hanging frrom the ceiling. Nearby is a coffee table, and an envelope with the police department's seal on it. Whoever opens it will read a letter that reads "proto badgr kill."

If you go back to the library, you'll find Myriam's mirror still standing, but it doesn't function as a mirror anymore. You'll find a portrait of Aristotle Means instead, like a huge picture frame. A huge X painted in red covers about half of the portrait. The same goes for Matt and Simon Keye's mirrors - except Simon's mirror also has Matt's face on it. L O L.

The other mirrors have names again… although if you count, there seems to be only ten teams now: ]

Crime Scene A: Scuttlebutt

[It's all too sickeningly familiar. The thud, the body positioned almost identically to that of his old colleague's...

He doesn't even need to remember the brief looks under her box given back in court to recognize that this might be Miriam. Maybe he'll do some light investigating, but mostly he'll just stand sadly nearby, his hands in his pockets.]

Crime Scene B: Good Night, Sweet Princes

[And of course when he notices the open door, he slips inside to take a look. It's nauseating and of course all too reminiscent of a case from so many years ago. He'll check the scene at least to see what clues he can find. It's the least he can do, after he put one vote in their coffins.]
feytality: she'll beat you up with her noodle arms (Does Maya have to smack a bitch?)

[Phoenix, dressed down in his hobo-wear, turns to face her and forces a smile.]

Up and at it already, huh? Well... we have two different scenes that can be examined.
feytality: (oh he diiiiiidn't girlfrien)

[personal profile] bewrightback 2015-03-04 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just saying, Maya... Neither of us are in what you would call standard fashion, right?
feytality: (gettin reel tired of your cold mask Nick)

[personal profile] feytality 2015-03-04 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmph! I look like an adorable and professional spirit medium, thank you very much! You just look like a guy who tripped into the closet!

Or a hobo.
bewrightback: (hobo | disbelief)

[personal profile] bewrightback 2015-03-05 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I... I do not look like a hobo! These are just ordinary everyday clothes...
shacklebreaker: (everyone is a dotard)

A

[personal profile] shacklebreaker 2015-03-03 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[Blackquill joins him, and it takes only a cursory look at the scene to realise what is so familiar about it.]

We are truly being toyed with, for a crime scene to be recreated like this...
bewrightback: (hobo | sad eyes)

[personal profile] bewrightback 2015-03-03 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[Phoenix has his hands in his pockets and shakes his head sadly.]

That seems to be the case. They seem to know a lot about the murder cases relevant to the listed names... [He sounds more disgusted than anything, and he looks down at the floor.]

...She was supposed to be safe.
shacklebreaker: (eyes closed)

[personal profile] shacklebreaker 2015-03-03 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
No one here is truly safe, so long as we are all at that creature's mercy... which was precisely why I urged you to act.

[There's a lot more at stake here than Apollo's fingers and the Chief Prosecutor's cravats.]
bewrightback: (hobo | figure it out on your own)

[personal profile] bewrightback 2015-03-03 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
But I did act, in the end. I cast my vote and I bloodied my hands with those two...

I couldn't find any other way. I couldn't turn the tables. And now, despite all of that, this innocent person... Myriam...
shacklebreaker: (looking away)

[personal profile] shacklebreaker 2015-03-03 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed... For an innocent child to meet her end... Those responsible must be found and punished.
bewrightback: (hobo | thinky thoughts with myself)

[personal profile] bewrightback 2015-03-03 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[That won't bring her back. ...But it can save others from a similar fate.]

I agree. But that brings up the question of... Who could have done this? Was it one of those badgers after all, or- or someone among us? [He leans over for a moment.]

...This isn't our normal crime scene. I don't know where we would start in looking for a culprit.
shacklebreaker: (delicious feather omnom)

[personal profile] shacklebreaker 2015-03-03 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[Blackquill nods grimly.] What hinders any investigation further is the fact this body has clearly been positioned to reflect the Themis murder... It almost seems like a taunt. A fabrication of another fabrication, the evidence deliberately crafted...

Yet there is no note here as there was with Keyes' and Engarde's bodies. Which leads one to wonder instead: did the allies of the Bad Badger do this?
bewrightback: (hobo | disbelief)

[personal profile] bewrightback 2015-03-03 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The allies of the bad badger...

If that's so, then whoever the allies are would have needed someone to tell them how to set up this murder. After all, there's not many here who would even know about the Themis murder case, especially to this level of detail.

The "proto" the "bad" badger... It seems that the murders linked with either of them are being carried out in a similar style: imitating cases of the past.
shacklebreaker: (evidence burd)

[personal profile] shacklebreaker 2015-03-03 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The Engarde deaths are similar to other cases as well, then? What do you know about them?

[Blackquill knew Engarde from the clink, but the finer details of his crimes and the trial aren't something he's familiar with.]
bewrightback: (hobo | sad eyes)

[personal profile] bewrightback 2015-03-03 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I was the defense attorney in Engarde's case... It looks like both of the deaths are associated with his past. [He spares a glance towards the room of dead people before looking back towards Blackquill.]

The case was the murder of Juan Corrida, Engarde's lifelong rival. Engarde was found guilty of hiring an assassin to kill Corrida, and now Engarde's body is positioned exactly the same as Corrida's when he was found. The only difference is that Engarde is in his own Nickel Samurai costume instead of Corrida's "Jammin' Ninja".

As for Mr. Keyes's position... That has to do with an incident that came up during the trial. In Engarde's past, a poor woman named Celeste Inpax wound up being used by both Engarde and Corrida as part of their rivalry. She had been lovers of both of them at different times, and ultimately her chance at marriage was destroyed by their rivalry, and she... she hanged herself.
shacklebreaker: (taka is going to cut you)

[personal profile] shacklebreaker 2015-03-03 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmph. I knew he was not the harmless airhead of a celebrity he pretended to be, but to sink to such lows... It seems like this was "an eye for an eye" justice to the highest degree.

[Even so, it's still difficult to see this as anything other than murder... Even if the Proto Badger were some kind of twisted vigilante.]
bewrightback: (hobo | disgruntled)

[personal profile] bewrightback 2015-03-03 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
A pale imitation of justice, maybe. [He scoffs.] One where Myriam Scuttlebbutt is supposed to be Aristotle Means and Simon Keyes is supposed to be Matt Engarde.
