MIDNIGHT/DAY 2 - suspicion

[ In the spirit of Ace Attorney, the game where murders happen but NO ONE ACTUALLY SEES THE ACTUAL THING EXCEPT FOR THE PERPETRATORS…

The night has ended. You might have ousted someone, but NOTHING HAPPENS. You go back to your rooms and you find some samurai dogs by your bedside. At least there's food. Better than nothing. But you feel tired. It's been a long and stressful day. Could you even sleep at that rate?

In the middle of the night, you might hear a loud thud. If you wake up (or if you were already awake) and check the hallway, you'll find a bust—or its remnants—by the mirror closer to the Hawthorne and Gavin rooms. The statue is coloured… pink? Magenta? Well, whatever.

Behind the bust is a body… a dead body. Yup, that's right.

If you approach it, you'll find the dead body of Myriam Scuttlebutt. There's no box, just the young girl. If you saw her without the guise of her box, you'll realise that she isn't wearing her school uniform. She has a green jumpsuit on. Her arms were raised and had some red markings on her wrist, as if her hands had been tied. An awl was lodged in her abdomen. Dried blood by her wound, as if the blood had seeped through from her wound.

Myriam Scuttlebutt has been taken out by the allies of the Bad Badger. You have all been warned. You should have expected this.

If you decide to do a headcount, you'll find that one team is missing. One team with two members in it. The room to the Engarde room is swinging open. Do you check it out?

Upon entering, you'll find Matt Engarde's corpse placed conveniently on a chair. You'd think it's Matt, anyway. He seems to be wearing the Nickel Samurai costume. He's seated with his head facing the ground. There's a scarf on his neck, placed rather too tightly. Did he did from strangulation…? By the chair is an open guitar case, and a vanity with a wine glass on top of it.

By the only mirror in the room is Simon Keye's body, hanging frrom the ceiling. Nearby is a coffee table, and an envelope with the police department's seal on it. Whoever opens it will read a letter that reads "proto badgr kill."

If you go back to the library, you'll find Myriam's mirror still standing, but it doesn't function as a mirror anymore. You'll find a portrait of Aristotle Means instead, like a huge picture frame. A huge X painted in red covers about half of the portrait. The same goes for Matt and Simon Keye's mirrors - except Simon's mirror also has Matt's face on it. L O L.

The other mirrors have names again… although if you count, there seems to be only ten teams now: ]

[Hahaah... Hey partner, let's brainstorm. Even though Palaeno isn't sure how much help he'll be.]

I suppose there would have to be some sort of incentive for the Bad Badger's allies to play along. Otherwise, they would've stepped forward on the very first day to reveal themselves and put an end to all this. [He likes to think that most people here are honest enough to do it.]

However, that is assuming the Bad Badger's allies are even aware of their roles. If this title was assigned at random and the individuals in question weren't informed, that complicates matters.

[There's those letters, of course, but... C'mon, most of those things got everyone's names wrong. How much faith can they place in that sort of information?]

[personal profile] devilsworkday 2015-03-04 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
...I'd think they'd have to be aware of their roles, simply because that would run the risk of them unknowingly voting one of their own out, wouldn't it? I'd think they would want to avoid that.

[His tone isn't sharp, however; firm, but not harsh.]

But that does raise a valid point about how there must be incentive - after all, we weren't aware at the start that this little elimination game involved death, were we? So either they knew already and were all right with letting us die, or there's some reason they couldn't.

[...Right. That makes sense.]

Could there be even more hostages involved? Or perhaps the Bad Badger itself plays a part in all this.

...I won't tell you you're wrong, but I do want to hear what you think about that. Assume the Bad Badger itself is involved - in what way?

[...Welcome to the defense bench, Palaeno. It's entirely groping around in the dark like this to come up with theories and then seeing which sounds least completely damn stupid.]

[Oh... Uhm.]

Well, it's safe to assume to Blue Badger is involved to some degree, as we were told to 'help' it. The two teams are allies of the Blue Badger and allies of the Bad Badger. Perhaps the Bad Badger is forcing the arms of its own allies somehow.
devilsworkday: any more than he cares for the lack of it in others (007. god won't care for your benevolence)

[personal profile] devilsworkday 2015-03-04 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[...hold...on. Hold on, wait.]

...But we have yet to actually see this Blue Badger, though, isn't that right? We've seen the Proto Badger several times over, but neither the Blue Badger or the Bad Badger have made an appearance, and from the sound of it Justice was being tortured by the Proto Badger as well - or at least, the manner of speaking he mentioned would imply that.

Mr. Armando mentioned the possibility of these teams of allies - Bad Badger and Blue Badger both - being a farce. That's something we can't rule out.

[personal profile] turnaboutcoupons 2015-03-04 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true, but we also can't rule out the possibility that the Blue Badger might be incapable of showing itself for whatever reason. [Maybe it was murdered by the Bad Badger, ooohhh... The plot thickens.]

Considering none of the Blue Badger's friends have actually met this creature, I'd say the team names are a bit of a farce either way.
devilsworkday: sell you on me after all that I have done (001. but no words ever did sell you)

[personal profile] devilsworkday 2015-03-04 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there's that, of course - but it's also possible that none of us are allied with the Bad Badger at all, isn't it?
turnaboutcoupons: (Nervous | talking)

[personal profile] turnaboutcoupons 2015-03-04 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. I suppose so. If that's true, there is no way for us to 'win' this little game.
devilsworkday: it's fucking people over (002. this thing i consider my only art)

[personal profile] devilsworkday 2015-03-04 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. So let's hope our luck isn't quite that terrible, shall we?

[personal profile] turnaboutcoupons 2015-03-04 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering there are hostages involved, I would think that it is possible to come out victorious. Otherwise, why attempt to force our hands at all?
devilsworkday: turn your back on mother nature (004. acting on your best behavior)

[And now is when he probably should snap at him a little, or at the very least gently point out (if he has it in him to be gentle at all) that the worst possible conclusion is sometimes the correct one - that it's possible that this entire exercise is some sort of sick game for whomever's holding them here, and if that's the case then all the hostages will probably die once everyone in this mansion has because sometimes people are just terrible excuses for human beings and sometimes the correct response to a question like the one Palaeno just posed really is "pure sadism." It's not often that one sees things like that, but once in a while you'll come across a case that serves to remind you that sometimes? People just suck like that.

Honestly, when Kristoph himself was indicted it was most certainly an instance of "sometimes people just suck," and he put everyone through those particular paces twice.

But as it stands he just...pauses for a moment, and he considers, and he smiles a bit and quite simply doesn't, because he's clearly feeling a bit charitable today.

It won't kill him to spare the guy's feelings for once in his miserable goddamn life, because it's entirely possible that this guy's feelings are what spared his miserable goddamn life yesterday.]

Ah, that's another valid point - it does still beg the question of what we're supposed to do now, but we'll sort through it, I'm sure.

[Sorry Kristoph, Palaeno likes to believe that most human beings have a thing called humanity. That sort of naivety is what got him a smuggling ring member for a secretary. ...Okay, so he's not a great judge of character. He knows it. Even so, he likes to look on the bright side of things.]

Agent Lang's advice was for us not to resist and do as we're told. [He doesn't agree with it, but surely Lang knows what he's talking about, right?]

[...In some ways it's probably for the best that they're paired up, given that Kristoph will hopefully be invested in not letting Palaeno wander into a deathtrap of some sort, and Palaeno will...just continue aggressively being himself and somehow between them not-dying will fall out.]

...We'll see how long that plan holds out, then, if that's what you believe we should do.

I'm well aware that I owe you for last night, you know.

[NOT ENOUGH TO GIVE YOU THE BED, MIND.]

[Yes, with Kristoph's merciless, calculating nature and Palaeno's likeable nature, they're a force to be reckoned with.]

Ah! No, that's... I can't take credit for something like that. You don't owe me anything at all.
